The agile transformation has become one of the latest business disruption trends. It is an inevitable change that most organizations will need to go through to survive the ever-changing markets. It is a complex and extensive journey.

However, it does not need to be so! Following a structured, integrated agile transformation journey that involves stakeholders and is supported by the right technologies can help ease the complexity of this journey.

Part of the responsibility falls on the Human Resources teams. They play a strategic role in the agile transformation journey due to their immediate involvement with corporate governance and leadership and their input on resizing the workforce and creating new organizational structures, defining new roles and responsibilities, and workflows, managing talent, and communicating the new organizational culture.

Human Resources teams certainly face a large set of challenges during the agile transformation process, and while many are evident, a few are not. These include:

-Adhering to agile values such as transparency, which is highly regarded in an agile organization, can be challenging due to confidentiality protocols between management, HR, and employees, low levels of trust, lack of encouragement, and psychologically unsafe environments.

-Becoming agile might mean the organization will focus on collaborative networks rather than hierarchical structures. This change comes with its challenges, including; team changes and leaders being uncomfortable with losing power and control.

-Abolishing the established rewards/punishment system to avoid extrinsic motivation while increasing the emphasis on intrinsic motivations within the organization. This is done by encouraging autonomy at work, enabling employees to find purpose in their efforts, and helping them advance their skills

-Replacing the old retention program, which is based on external motivation, with one based on engagement and believing in allows employees to take risks, fail and learn from their failures, fosters loyalty, and enhances the sense of belonging, which in turn increases employee retention.

-Harnessing the power of technology quickly as new systems and technological tools become available could impose a challenge on all teams, and the HR team is no exception. Continuous training and development on all levels will become required and HR needs to facilitate training opportunities selected by the teams by providing materials and raising awareness of the training opportunities available
