Agility is often seen as an aspirational state; however, with some planning and preparation, it is actually very attainable for technical teams. Therefore, below are five main steps that technical teams should consider in order to achieve agility:

1-Work on Your Mindset:

An agile mindset is essential for successfully achieving and sustaining agility in any organization. This involves, first and foremost, having a growth-oriented attitude where failure is normalized and used as an opportunity to learn and improve. Additionally, it requires communicating frequently and effectively. Moreover, embracing change and accepting it is crucial, as well as respecting people. Furthermore, focusing on simplicity and delivering value to stakeholders are key aspects to consider.

A solid understanding of the values and principles that underpin the different agility practices is necessary to apply them effectively. Courses and certifications can provide invaluable insights to learn what you need about agility.

3-Prepare a Development Roadmap:

Selecting a suitable track or certification program that aligns with future goals is crucial when establishing a development roadmap for agility. Additionally, taking courses from accredited sources will ensure that agility practices are learned quickly and effectively. Agility is often viewed as an aspirational state; however, it is highly attainable for technical teams with careful planning and preparation. Therefore, here are five main steps that technical teams should consider to achieve agility:

4-Implement Agility Within Your Team:

While agile practices should be adopted at every level of an organization, starting on a small scale with your team or a few teams can still have a positive impact. A few practices to consider applying, as an agile technical team, are: mastering your craft, seeking continuous improvement, being very selective with your tools, and building a beneficial and sustainable product incrementally. Always remember to give yourselves ample time to adapt to the new working style that fits with agile values, principles, and practices. Through transparency and open communication, try to obtain buy-in from leadership before implementing agility to ensure commitment and support of all other functions to the new ways of work.

5-Acquire Agile Supporting Technology & Measure Results:

Having access to the right technologies and tools can significantly support agile practices within an organization, while both quantitative and qualitative metrics on success rates are provided when applied correctly. Therefore, flexibility must be maintained, and regular adjustments should be made based on the results achieved. Most importantly, culture and mindset must be continually reinforced at all levels to ensure the ongoing adoption of agility within the organization for long-term success.
